But eventually 2.79 will grow dusty and everyone will switch to 2.8. I suspect the Blender community will be split for several month if not a year. You won't be alone if you chose to do so either. Like any new software, first versions are often buggy and less stable than updated versions down the road.

You can simply right click on them and save the images to your computer if you want to use them. It's not a terrible choice to stick with 2.79. Below are my 3 personal favorite matcaps from 2.79. On that page you’ll find a list of the matcaps in.

Luckily all the 2.79 matcap images are available to download here on GitHub. Download your favorite 2.79 matcaps from GitHub Another advantage the red matcap has over the stripes is that you can keep it enabled while modeling without going blind. Changing the Blender path in Studios settings allows you to select the rute of the program you want to use. If you had problems with 2.70, as Feyona said you can try 2.76 to import the meshes. I just use 2.70 to import into Studio and the game. Even the new zebra stripe matcaps don’t do nearly as well as the old reflective red matcap when it comes to pointing out even the most minor flaws. I use 2.79 as my main working program for modeling and everything really. I think all the new matcaps fall far short in that regard. Matcaps are sleek to look at but they can also be extremely useful for surface analysis. The good news is that we can easily get the old matcaps into the latest Blender version. That’s like saying “I want to learn how to drive, but I think it would be a good idea to learn to drive a steam automobile before I fully commit, and I will learn some outdated traffic rules while I’m at it”.Since Blender 2.8 and beyond there is a whole new collection of matcaps, sadly leaving behind some of the tried-and-true matcaps from 2.79. This is a terrible, terrible idea and there’s not a single reason you should inflict this upon yourself. But we were in this together and you’ll be 4 years late to a party in a completely meaningless way. Trying to learn the old version will teach you some outdated techniques, practices and hotkeys that are no longer valid.īlender 2.80+ and 3 has a completely different interface compared to older versions, and when you switch to a modern version you will be wondering where all the things menus and buttons went, like we wondered back in the day when 2.80 was introduced. Blender 2.79 is 5 years old at this point and is not a good representation of what Blender is.

Blender 3 and blender 2.79 are two entirely different pieces of software. I would politely disagree that using 2.79 as a newbie is a nice decision.
